Automatic Classification of Benign And Malignant Liver Tumors In Ultrasound Images
Authors
Abstract:
Introduction: Differentiation of benign and malignant liver tumors is very important for finding appropriate treatment procedure. Human eyes sometime are not able to diagnose the type of liver tumor. Texture analysis is considered as a suitable method to increase the diagnostic power of medical images. In this study texture analysis is employed in order to classification of benign and malignant liver tumors in ultrasound images. Materials and Methods: Our study was performed on 38 patients (25 malignant and 13benign). After selection of proper ROI, about 270 parameters were extracted from each ROI. Fisher algorithm was employed for selection of the best discriminating features. Three analysis methods (PCA, LDA and NDA) were performed at the last stage. Statistical analysis of data was performed by Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC). Results: The result of our study was very plausive. The best discrimination result was belong to NDA with sensitivity and specificity of 100%. PCA and LDA also had good results (sensitivity of 97% and 98% respectively). Conclusion: This study show that texture analysis is able to classify benign and malignant liver tumors in US images with the high performance quality. Therefore, texture analysis may be a useful method for classification of benign and malignant liver tumors.

Automated differentiation of benign and malignant liver tumors by Ultrasound Images
Background & Aims: Early detection and reliable differentiation of benign and malignant liver tumors could lead to improved cure rate and costs. Ultrasound image (US) is a convenient medical imaging method for interpreting liver tumors. Visual inspection of ultrasound images sometimes is combined with error and needs biopsy to confirm whether a tumor would be benign or malignant. The aim of thi...
full textAutomatic classification of Non-alcoholic fatty liver using texture features from ultrasound images
Background: Accurate and early detection of non-alcoholic fatty liver, which is a major cause of chronic diseases is very important and is vital to prevent the complications associated with this disease. Ultrasound of the liver is the most common and widely performed method of diagnosing fatty liver. However, due to the low quality of ultrasound images, the need for an automatic and intelligent...

full textFrequency of Cytomegalovirus (CMV) in benign and malignant tumors
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a widespread pathogen that is found in milk, saliva, urine, cervical secretions, and semen fluid. It is supposed that CMV is a risk factor for breast cancer. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of CMV among benign and malignant breast tumors. Paraffin embedded breast carcinoma (n=24) and fibroadenoma (n=24) samples were collected from Toos and Firoozgar...

Introduction: Early detection and treatment of thyroid nodules increase the cure rate and provide optimal treatment. Ultrasound is the chosen imaging technique for assessment of thyroid nodules. Confirmation of the diagnosis usually demands repeated fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB). So, current management, has morbidity and non zero mortality. The goal of the present study ...
full textMTA1 Expression in Benign and Malignant Salivary gland Tumors
Introduction: Salivary gland tumors (SGTs) are important parts of human neoplasms. The most common SGT is pleomorphic adenoma and the most common malignant SGTs are mucoepidermoid carcinoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC). Metastasis-associated genes 1 (MTA1), a member of the nucleosome remodeling and histone deacetylation complex, is one newly discovered gene which recruits histone deacetyl...
